Kate Garraway told to dump Derek Draper as it 'wasn't what she signed up for'

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has described how she was left in shock after being told that she should 'get out' of her relationship Derek Draper as 'it wasn't what she signed up for.'

The 53-year-old TV host has faced a gruelling 12 months after her husband Derek Draper was hospitalised with coronavirus in March last year, where he remains.

Despite overcoming the deadly virus, it has left serious lasting damage to his body.

The Good Morning Britain host said that she believes that the person who made the comment "meant it weirdly kindly" but she was left gobsmacked by the brutal suggestion.

Doctors have said that Derek has had the ' worst coronavirus infection ' of any surviving patient after he nearly died six times at the height of his fight with the virus.

While he shocked doctors when he uttered his first word in October, which was heartbreakingly the word "pain", he has a way to go yet in his recovery before he is able to return home to his wife and family.

In the ITV documentary airing tonight, Kate documents her difficult year with Derek and opens up about what is next for him.

But she also opens up about her conversation she had that left her stunned.

"Somebody said to me the other day, 'You are allowed to say 'this isn't what I signed up for' and get out'," she says. "And I was like, 'Oh my god.' I mean, I know they meant it weirdly kindly, as if almost giving me license. But I said, 'I can't think that! He's in there!'"

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
