Kate Garraway told Derek Draper is 'sickest person doctors have seen in 34 years'

Kate Garraway has been told by doctors that her husband Derek Draper is the sickest person they have seen in over 34 years of medicine.

The father-of-two first fell ill with the coronavirus back in March and while he has now beaten the virus, Derek remains in a critical condition in a medically induced coma.

Speaking about the ordeal on her Good Morning Britain return today, Kate said that one of Derek's doctors told her: "He is sick as anyone I've ever seen in 35 years of medicine let alone with Covid'.

"Six times they've told me he's not going to make it," she added.

Kate got emotional as she opened up about her husband's incredible fight on GMB this morning (ITV)

Kate, who has spent the last 14 weeks off work caring for her children described her husband's fight as a 'very desperate situation."

"The doctors keep saying it's a miracle he is still alive. We've nearly lost him six times," she explained.

But Kate said she was lucky that the NHS staff were as determined as she was not to give up on Derek, 52.

Listing the positives of his condition, Kate said: "His lungs are starting to recover, his kidneys are doing better his liver is doing better but they don't know how much better he can get."

The I'm A Celeb star said the problem with coronavirus was that it was a 'new disease with no data' though she'd tried to research as thoroughly as possible herself to try and help Derek.

As Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid praised Kate for her tremendous strength over the last few months, the presenter admitted she's had some low moments.

"Each stage has been a new terror," she recalled.

Kate, 52, then said Pies had called her up and 'almost told her off' when she hit rock bottom.

Piers admitted he'd given Kate some tough love (ITV)

"We've talked about the most terrible things imaginable," said Piers. "The potential of losing Derek. And you've somehow held it together... although that's not always been the case."

"I did say to you I'm absolutely losing it you're going to have to give me a massive pep talk," admitted Kate.

"And then you took a breath and gave me this rallying - I almost swore then - you were almost telling me off. But in the nicest possible way..."

Kate will make her official return to her presenting duties next week (ITV)

Kate will officially return to the studio next Monday alongside Ben Shepherd to present the ITV daytime show.

She will also be back at her Smooth Fm presenting job after saying doctors had urged her to 'get on.'

"Derek would not just be saying, ‘Come back’, he’d be saying, ‘Why haven’t you done it before?’” she joked.
