Kate Garraway to make permanent return to Good Morning Britain after heartbreaking interview

Kate Garraway will make a permanent return to Good Morning Britain after breaking viewers' hearts with an emotional interview about her husband Derek Draper.

Kate and her family have had an incredibly traumatic few months after former Labour aide Derek contracted coronavirus and was then taken into intensive care, where he has remained ever since.

Earlier this week, Kate revealed that Derek faces 'an uncertain path' with his recovery, taking to Instagram to post: "Derek recovering & coming home is not nearly in sight & very uncertain.

"But it feels positive to share how we are trying to keep ourselves going as I know so many are dealing with terrible challenges in all sorts of ways as we all try to emerge from these ghastly times, just as we continue to hope Derek can emerge from his minimum state of consciousness.

Kate Garraway says her children have 'effectively' lost their dad

"I hope reading this helps in some way . Thank you everyone for your lovely good wishes and for sending me your stories of how you’ve been coping too."

She returned to the GMB studio on Wednesday morning and broke down as she said her children have 'effectively lost her dad'.

Fighting back tears, the I'm A Celebrity star said: "Each stage has been a new terror and just when I thought we were moving forward, then suddenly we know how it can affect your body everywhere, nerves, everything".

Speaking to Kate and the show's hosts, Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, Lorraine Kelly said she really wanted to give Kate a hug and then added: "It's so good to have you back and on Monday of course."

And then, later on in the show, paying tribute to GMB's behind the scenes staff, Piers said: "Kate...you will see on Monday," before she promised: "I promise we'll have some laughs next week."

Kate will return just as Piers and Susanna take an extended break from their presenting duties for summer, with them set to be absent until September.
