Kate Garraway tells of lovely birthday celebration for hospitalised husband Derek

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has shared the way she and her family celebrated husband Derek's birthday last weekend.

Derek Draper, 54, is in a minimally-conscious state following a battle with coronavirus but the TV presenter revealed today that while challenging, the family marked his special day with a cake and a FaceTime session.

She said: "It was Derek's birthday on Saturday, which was obviously a challenging one in the circumstances.

"We managed to FaceTime him and sing happy birthday and we had a cake, which we had on FaceTime. We just hope the love seeps through really."

The GMB frontwoman revealed that co-presenter Charlotte Hawkins had sent her a rosebush which had come to flower on Derek's birthday last weekend.

"It's named the rose of hope and it actually came into flower on Saturday on his birthday," she said.

Garraway, who was absent from the morning show on Monday to spend time with children Darcey and Billy before their return to school, added that the pair are 'doing brilliantly' despite the challenging time.

In the touching reveal she added that daughter, Darcey, had been gardening during the tough time and it has helped the family with moving forward.

"It's quite poignant as well, because we planted loads of plants, Darcy did, when Derek was first ill and they've come and gone and we're picking tomatoes which have come to seed," she said.

"It's amazing how nature helps you mark the passing of time, which is therapeutic in a way. 'Let's plant these and when dad's better he can see them come up..'

"We've been trying to keep things moving forward."

Husband Derek has been in an induced coma since April after contracting the virus and struggling to breathe. Last week Garraway said that a blood plasma treatment was too late for her husband, but being able to share treatments that work on Good Morning Britain was 'wonderful'.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
