Kate Garraway tells GMB of hearing husband Derek mouth 'heartbreaking' word

Kate Garraway has spoken of the moment she first heard husband Derek Draper mouth a word as he remains in hospital with coronarvirus and associated serious health problems.

The Good Morning Britain presenter joined hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard ahead of her Finding Derek documentary due to be aired on ITV today.

Susanna said a lot of people will remember that moment when Kate said Derek, a former political adviser, was able to mouth a word: "And we were heartbroken about which word it was. It was the word pain."

Footage of Derek mouthing the word is included in the documentary which is shown tonight on ITV and GMB viewers were shown a clip from the programme.

It shows Kate watching footage on her phone when a member of medical staff asks Derek if it's okay, and he says 'pain.'

Kate says: “So, that is the first time I saw him mouth a word. And he mouths, pain.

“I saw it really clearly, and I thought ‘pain pain’ and they just said, okay, ‘pain’. I didn’t particular react, but then afterwards we all burst into tears.

It was the first time Kate had seen him mouth the words and Derek was then asked to show the medical staff where the pain was, but he couldn’t.

Susanna said conversations have since been had between Kate and Derek, but Kate added that the word 'conversation' was stretching it, there had been more words but his recovery had regressed a bit.
