Kate Garraway talks 'extraordinary' first weekend at home with Derek

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway has spoken about her first weekend at home with husband Derek Draper, who had been in hospital since contracting Covid in March 2020.

Derek, 53, a former political lobbyist is the UK's longest-suffering Covid patient and returned to his family home via ambulance last week after a year in hospital.

He is now receiving 24-hour care at home.

Kate returned to work on Good Morning Britain on Monday alongside Susanna Reid, who said it was 'incredible' to be presenting with Kate.

Susanna said she had cancelled her holiday to present to front the show's coverage in the lead up to Prince Phillip's funeral on Monday.

Revealing Derek returned home from hospital on Wednesday evening, Kate said: "It's extraordinary. We are over the moon and overwhelmed.

"It's like when you first bring home your firstborn home and you've been planning for nine months."

Susanna said it must benefit Derek being surrounded by Kate and his children Darcey and William again.

"It was a medical reason for reason for coming home as well as our desire and his desire too, to try and encourage a more normal environment to stimulate his recovery, cognition, and consciousness better."

She told viewers her children have been 'loving' having their dad home - after going six months without seeing him.

Kate then explained that while Derek is at home they have an alarm system in place for him to call if he needs something and 24 hour care staff living with them.

"If you are wondering why I'm here - here are people there," she explained. "Someone is there for Derek and the children so we're all good."

Susanna said it was important for Kate to be working.

"We gradually need to make everything work," replied Kate.

"We've had a couple of lovely moments where [Derek] has reacted to something Darcey said.

"I don't want to get my hopes up too much."

Kate thanked viewers for all their support after she revealed on Friday morning her husband was returning home from hospital.
