Kate Garraway supported by fans after troll criticised Derek Draper doc as 'shameful'

Kate Garraway has been supported by her co-hosts and fans following her heartbreaking documentary.

The Good Morning Britain star's ITV film, Finding Derek, followed Kate from August last year to February this year as her husband Derek Draper faced the crippling effects of coronavirus.

Derek, 53, contracted the virus in March 2020 and was admitted to hospital where he was soon placed in an induced coma.

However, he suffered kidney failure, liver and pancreatic damage, has holes in his lungs from pneumonia and has lost 8 stone following his battle remains in a prolonged disorder of consciousness.

In the documentary, Kate shared personal footage she filmed herself as Derek underwent rehab.

It showed as he uttered his first word "pain" in October before he was able to speak more with Kate on FaceTime.

During and after the documentary, which ended with Derek on FaceTime telling his wife of 16 years 'Thank you and I love you,' Kate was inundated with support.

GMB co-host and friend of more than 20 years Ben Shephard wrote: "So proud of my friend @kategarraway she continues to surprise, delight, occasionally infuriate but always inspire me. Thinking of Kate, her family and anyone who is battling Covid or has lost someone close to them to the virus. #FindingDerek."

Piers Morgan called the documentary "heartbreaking" before sharing an image of Nelson Mandela and the quote "It always seems impossible until it's done", to which Piers added: "Love you @kategarraway."

GMB's Charlotte Hawkins added: "Thinking of my lovely friend @kategarraway tonight with her documentary #FindingDerek on @ITV at 9pm. It’s so heartbreaking, we’re all just praying Derek will find a way back. Please watch & send love to Kate & her family."

Martin Lewis said: "It's very difficult watching #FindingDerek but nothing compared to living it. Kate 's positivity and preserverence is so powerful. I just keep trying to grab glimpses of the quick, witty, warm Derek I remember. To see his anxiety and confusion is horrible. I pray he' s found."

But under Ben's post, a cruel comment was left which read: "Absolutely shameful that kate would film this! It's more Kate The journalist rather than Kate Garraway the wife!"

Fans waded in and defended Kate.

"You couldn’t be more wrong with your comment. She is a true inspiration," wrote one.

Another said: "If you can be anything #BeKind I hope Derek’s children can’t read your silly negativity."

"Must have been watching a different programme. She came across as a loving wife and mum," a third added.

A fourth hit back: "What a horrific and heartless comment. Why bother."

Kate went on to thanks fans for their support.

"Thank you so much for all your lovely comments," she tweeted. "Your support means so much to me and others. I hope you find some comfort and hope from the doc #findingderek tonight @itv and do get in touch with me to share your thoughts - either here or email me kate@clubgarraway.com."
