Kate Garraway steps back from GMB to look after Derek and support kids

Kate Garraway has confirmed that she is stepping back from Good Morning Britain.

The ITV presenter returned to GMB in July for the first time since March, after her husband was struck down with coronavirus but now says she needs a break to spend time with her family.

Derek Draper remains in hospital, with his recovery still not clear due to the damage Covid-19 has caused to his body.

GMB viewers have loved having Kate back on the show, but now she will not be returning next week she revealed.

On Friday, she took the moment to thank fans and her ITV family for their support since her return.

It's then that she revealed she wanted to spend some time with her kids Darcey and Billy as they prepare to go back to school.

She also wanted to spend time with Derek and help him as he continues his recovery in hospital.

Kate told viewers: "I'm actually not here next week, I'm taking a bit of time off to help Billy get sorted for secondary school, the children, Darcey as well to get into school.

"Also Derek, look after things on that."

Kate Garraway and Alex Beresford vowed to have fun on Good Morning Britain (ITV)

She went on: "I just want to say thanks to all of you for being absolutely brilliant since I've come back through challenging times.

"Everyone here, you, Ben, Adil and all of the people off and on screen have been amazing.

"The nice thing is everyone talks about ITV and television being this brutal business, and it 's not, it's a family and you've all been amazing."

Regular GMB hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid will be back hosting the show from September 1, but it's unclear when viewers will next see Kate onscreen again.

On Thursday, before the news, Kate praised co-star Alex Beresford's first stint as host as she prepared for her final show for a while.

Sharing a photo of them both together behind the desk, she said: "Absolute please to be there for @alexberesfordtv ‘s first show - he was great don’t you think?

"Let’s do it all again tomorrow - see you at 6 tomorrow for a very busy news show ( we’ll sneak some fun in too , don’t worry!) xxx."

Meanwhile on Wednesday's show, the hosts had spoken to Dynasty actress Emma Samms, who still suffers from breathlessness and fatigue after contracting the virus back in March.

"That is something you and I have spoken about with Derek," Kate told Hilary.

"Once the virus has gone, it's the long-term damage."
