Kate Garraway speaks out on 'overwhelming' first weekend home with husband Derek after hospital stay

Kate Garraway has spoken for the first time about why her husband Derek has come home from his year long hospital stay.

And the TV presenter admitted it has been overwhelming and challenging, as she explained why her husband has had to return.

Derek was hit by Covid-19 during the first wave of the pandemic, and has been in hospital since March last year.

He returned to Kate's family home last Wednesday.

Kate told Good Morning Britain: "Derek came home Wednesday evening and, yes, it is extraordinary.

"We sort of feel over the moon and overwhelmed in equal measure, you know?

"It is quite an overwhelming feeling.

"I don't know if you remember that day when you bring home your first born?

"You have been planning for nine months, and you think 'what the heck do we do now?'.

"It has been completely overwhelming and wonderful."

Kate added: "It is amazing. Yes, you are right, it was a medical reason for coming home - as well as our desire, and his desire too - to create a better environment to stimulate his recovery better.

"The kids have been absolutely loving it. Absolutely loving it.

"I have noticed some deferring... they look at their dad and think 'shall we ask dad?' and I say 'hang on a moment'.

"They have been really helpful and yes, it has been great actually."

Kate was clearly thrilled to have Derek, who was the subject of recent documentary Finding Derek, back with her and added: "I am still the boss.

"Though I think Darcey has always been the boss, actually.

"Yes, they are excited and overwhelmed and we have an alarm system and we have people on hand to support.

"I am certainly not a doctor."

She later said on the show it was 'lovely' having him home, and that 'even last night going to bed it was like 'just take a moment. He's still home'

She added: "It's been fantastic, overwhelming and challenging and obviously we have a long way to go to see more of Derek and the dad we love.

He's got good people looking after him and I'll be racing back after the show."
