Kate Garraway skips Good Morning Britain amid concerns about Derek Draper's condition

Kate Garraway was absent from her usual Monday presenting slot on Good Morning Britain this week.

She normally presents the show alongside either Adil Ray or Ben Shephard, as Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid are on a summer break.

But instead, Adil was joined by Charlotte Hawkins, so viewers did not receive their normal update on Kate's husband, Derek Draper.

Despite fans' worries for Kate, it's understood she was always scheduled to have the day off.

Derek has been in intensive care after a horrific coronavirus battle put him into a medically-induced coma.

Derek is now in a barely-conscious state, and Kate recently revealed his recovery was far slower than she had hoped.

She said she was desperate for a "step forward", but had been warned by doctors to be thankful there were no major steps back.

Kate had asked healthcare professionals about donating her blood back in April, but was told at the time that they were "months away" from being confident enough to "clean blood".

Kate previously said: "The blood plasma treatment is too late to help Derek but the idea that we can spread things that are working on this show is wonderful.

"For me doing positive at that point and now is wonderful and something we can all do, those of us who have had the virus, to feel like we're helping.

"I am seeing Derek today and I will tell him about it but actually I know, I got a little ticking off from the team who have been helping him, because I haven't given them a mention.

"So good morning to you, thank you for everything you're doing and good morning to Derek as well.

"We don't know how much he can see or hear but we know the programme is on."

After a visit two weeks ago to see Derek in hospital, Kate said: "It was quite a tough visit yesterday, he has had a tough couple of weeks, and it's frustrating."

Derek's recovery will be a slow process as the virus has "attacked everything", leaving him with clots in his lungs, holes in his heart and made him diabetic, and doctors have warned Kate that Derek might never recover from the damage done to his body.
