Kate Garraway shares 'perfect' ending after husband's Christmas Day health scare

Kate Garraway shared details of a difficult Christmas Day as husband Derek Draper came close to a return to hospital.

The 54-year-old has battled severe ill-health since March 2020, his condition so severe Piers Morgan recently suggested he was the worst affected living Covid patient in the UK.

But despite initial concerns about his condition - and then some far less serious issues around parsnips and presents - Kate concluded the day ended “perfectly”.

TV presenter Kate has been caring for her husband since his release from hospital and has regularly updated fans throughout his fight for survival.

Last year Derek was placed in an induced coma and Kate recently described how the condition had affected him "from the top of his head to the tip of his toe".

The couple was able to spend this Christmas together with 16-year-old daughter Darcey and 12-year-old son William - though, in a post released by Kate on Instagram as Christmas Day drew to a close - Derek did suffer a health scare.

She wrote: “So the last 24 hours has been bumpy - a scare that meant Derek might have had to go back into hospital (thankfully sorted by a visit from nurse/carer), he has also had one of his ultra fatigue days so has been too weak to do much other than sleep.”

But while Derek’s condition initially flared, Kate was able to reveal there was a happy ending to a day that, ultimately, ended “perfectly”.

Sharing a photo of the Derek lying in bed surrounded by their children, Kate wrote: “I burnt the parsnips (Darceys favourite) & got the “wrong” Lego for Billy. But now snuggled up around Dad’s bed watching #nativity everything feels suddenly perfect.”

She continued: “Feel so grateful to have the chance to be together.”

And she added: “Sending love & hoping you have found some joy today whatever your circumstances.”
