Kate Garraway shares NTA win with husband Derek in emotional phone call

Kate Garraway rushed to share news of her National Television Awards victory with the man who couldn't be there to see her win, her husband Derek.

Good Morning Britain host Kate saw off contenders including Katie Price and son Harvey and Roman Kemp to take home the award for Beat Authored Documentary for Finding Derek, a new category for the NTAs 2021.

The whole of the O2 Arena got to their feet as Kate was announced as winner by Davina McCall as she looked shocked by the result.

The audience stayed on their feet as an emotional Kate took to the winners' rostrum to give a speech, saying: "I just want to say to all the Darcys, the Billys, the Dereks, the Dereks families out there - whatever you're going through and however you're affected, you're not forgotten.

"We want the joy back, we want it to be over; but if you're still living with the scars, the fight goes on."

She ended her speech: "Derek should be here and get the chance to tell his story. Derek you're going to get the chance - believe!"

And, appearing on Friday's GMB after just a few hours sleep, Kate revealed that Derek knew about her victory.

Explaining how she did it to colleague Martin Lewis, Kate said: "I managed to wake up Darcy on her phone - I'm sorry to teachers at her school today - and said 'please can you take the phone down to Dad.'

"She woke him up and he was a bit bewildered but he definitely knows."

Kate then shared a picture of Derek reacting to the news with bright eyes and a smile on his face.

She added: "He was so happy, you can see it in his eyes. I think he was happy that I was happy."

Finding Derek is all about Derek's health battle after he was struck down with coronavirus in March last year and how Kate and her family coped with not being able to visit him in hospital.

The documentary features some heartwarming and heartbreaking moments, including one when Derek told Kate he 'couldn't go on' during a FaceTime call.
