Kate Garraway shares first image of husband Derek Draper in hospital

Kate Garraway has bravely shared the first image of husband Derek Draper as he fought for his life in hospital during coronavirus battle.

The 53-year-old was seen in the trailer for Kate's new ITV documentary, Finding Derek, in which she will offer viewers an intimate look and unflinching account of the profound effects the pandemic has had on her family.

Derek remains seriously ill a year on from contracting the virus last March.

After being hospitalised, he was later placed into an induced coma and is now thought to be the UK's longest surviving Covid-19 inpatient as he remains in a form of coma called a PDOC (Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness).

In the trailer, Kate can be heard saying: "Derek is the sickest person the team of doctors have treated that has lived."

The screen goes black as a message reads: "One year later, Derek is still in hospital."

"Is he going to be able to come back or will he be alive but no longer the person he was?" Kate says as she holds her phone showing a photo of her husband of 15 years.

In a heartbreaking update over the weekend, Good Morning Britain star Kate told the Sunday Times Magazine she "doesn't know if he’ll ever have any kind of life again. We just don’t know."

The virus "wreaked havoc" throughout Derek's entire body, resulting in kidney failure, liver and pancreatic damage. He has holes in his lungs from pneumonia and has lost 8 stone.

Kate and the couple's children Darcey, 15, and William, 11, have been left devastated by Derek's condition.

"I am a de facto single parent now," Kate also told the Sunday Times Magazine.

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs on ITV on March 23 at 9pm.
