Kate Garraway shares distressing phone call husband made from hospital bed

Kate Garraway has shared what husband Derek Draper said to her in a heartbreaking call he made from his hospital bed as he battled the affects of coronavirus.

It has now been a full year since the former Labour aide was taken in hospital with symptoms of COVID-19 and he still remains there after his body was ravaged by the virus, with Kate left unable to see him due to lockdown restrictions.

Speaking on The One Show last week, Good Morning Britain star Kate explained to hosts Alex Jones and Michael Ball that Derek had an extreme case of the virus, saying: "What he had was what is called a prolonged disorder of consciousness, which means there is some reaction. He can open his eyes and before Christmas there was progress with words and communication."

And The Mirror reports that one of the calls he was able to make left Kate heartbroken.

Opening up about it in ITV documentary Finding Derek, which airs on Tuesday night, she says: "Derek had been drifting in and out of consciousness and when he said that, it was absolutely devastating, but it showed me he was still in there. Even though it was terrible to think his spirits were so low”.

Kate Garraway admits Derek is 'fighting to get out' as his brain is no longer his friend

Viewers will get to see a heart wrenching FaceTime call between the couple, who have children Billy and Darcy Derek says: "Kate, there’s no way out. There’s no way out.

“I’ve got to the point where I just think f*** it. Just f*** it.”

She replies: “As in die?”

A tearful Derek then says: “Yes... I don’t know how to cope, I don’t know how to cope."

On The One Show, Kate added that Derek's 'brain was no longer his friend,' explaining: "He is somebody who both in this time before I knew him when he was in politics and also since in all the work he has done in mental health because that’s his thing now.

"His brain has always been his best friend and he's lived on his wit and now suddenly his brain - as we all know controls his body - is no longer his friend and he's fighting to get out."
