Kate Garraway shares brilliant gesture from David Beckham for children during Derek's Covid battle

Kate Garraway has revealed that David Beckham was one of her many supporters while her husband Derek Draper battled coronavirus.

The former Manchester United star has been praised by the Good Morning Britain presenter for what he did for the couple's children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, last year.

In her new book Kate Garraway : The Power Of Hope, which is being serialised by the Mail On Sunday, Kate shared that David reached out to her on Instagram as Derek's condition deteriorated and he was put into an induced coma.

"I hadn’t had the chance to look at social media so it was Darcey and Billy who spotted it and squealed with delight," Kate said.

"I messaged him back, thanking him and saying the kids were thrilled."

Kate, 53, then went on to reveal that David, who is a father-of-four himself, went on to send personalised videos to give her children in the hope of encouraging them and putting a smile on their faces as their family faced such a horrific ordeal.

"He sent a personal video to each of them – words of encouragement and fun," Kate wrote in her new book.

"He said he’d been thinking of his own kids and how they might feel."

Derek is thought to be one of the UK's longest running in-patient for Covid-19.

He was finally allowed home to his family earlier this month after more than a year in hospital.

The 53-year-old was admitted to hospital in March 2020 after suffering coronavirus symptoms but was soon placed in an induced coma and the virus had a devastating effect on his body - suffering kidney failure, liver and pancreatic damage, as well as having holes in his lungs from pneumonia and lost eight stone following his battle.

He then remained in a prolonged disorder of consciousness but wife Kate has recently revealed some "little moments of reaction" as Derek continues his recovery at home with around-the-clock care.

The Power Of Hope by Kate Garraway (Transworld Publishers Ltd, £20), is released Thursday, April 29.
