Kate Garraway says there's a 'long road ahead' as she shares fresh message on Derek being in hospital

Kate Garraway has admitted there's a 'long road ahead' as she shared the special moment Sir Elton John shouted her and her husband Derek Draper out at his recent show. It was revealed on Tuesday (April 18) that the couple had headed to London's O2 arena to see the superstar singer on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

While on stage, Sir Elton told fans in the crowd that Good Morning Britain star Kate and her former political advisor husband Derek had endured "really tough times" following Derek's Covid ordeal which began in early 2020. "They’re inspiring," the 76-year-old said. "They’ve never given up and I’m so thrilled they’re here, I can’t believe they are here." He added: "I want to dedicate this song to the people I mentioned before, but especially to you guys."

He then sang Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me for the couple who had attended the gig alongside their two children Darcey, 17, and Billy, 13. Now, days after the memorable moment, Kate has shared a video to Instagram after she finally tracked down someone who managed to capture 76-year-old Sir Elton's dedication.

"… so this was a moment. Finally found someone who had actually filmed it rather than just burst into joyous tears as we did!!! Still can’t quite believe we were there at all - even hours before we feared Derek would be too weak - but he was determined," Kate typed alongside the post.

"Yes Derek has been back in hospital this week & yes there’s such a long road ahead but #eltonjohn & @davidfurnish you gave the kids & Derek a moment that we will never forget and has lifted their spirits again to feel anything is possible. Thank you for your inspiring music and huge heart."

The 55-year-old TV and radio star added: "Thank you too to everyone else who made the impossible possible. All the carers, the #rocketentertainment team , the gang @theo2london who work so hard to make concerts like this accessible & @addisonleecabs who worked hard to find suitable transport. We are bursting with gratitude."

Kate's GMB co-star Susanna Reid was among the first to comment on the post, writing: "So beautiful," and fans were also quick to comment - including some of those who were there on the night. @janineks said: "We were there and were in tears so can only imagine how you must have felt. Such a beautiful moment when everyone clapped and cheered for you."

@ali.claire.72 commented: "My husband and I were at the concert that night, and my heart melted when Elton said that he was dedicating the song for you, Derek and your kids…. Very special to share this moment with you all." @swlondoner wrote: "You are an inspiration, always remaining so humble and committed to keeping life normal for your family. This is so deserved."

@amanda_knight70 posted: "Oh dear Kate you and your beautiful family are truly inspiring. Fabulous Elton I am crying love him." @adrianslowey shared: "You all deserve the praise and a good night together." @renemac2018 added: "How wonderful. Such an amazing treat for you and your family. So very well deserved and so pleased it gave you all a precious memory."

Kate had said earlier this week that Derek, 55, was back in hospital for treatment following their rare night out together as she shared emotional details. She told Smooth Radio: "Right up to the last minute, I wasn’t sure if it would be possible to get Derek there. It took weeks of planning and just days before, it looked like he would be too sick to attend. Even on the journey there, he seemed so weak.

"But as soon as we got into the stadium and Elton went on stage, he started weeping tears of joy, and squeezed my hand so tightly." She said her husband refused to wear ear defenders for an hour so he could hear the music but "at one point it seemed it might be all too much for him" and "he started shaking".
