Kate Garraway admitted she feels like she has failed her children with supporting their homeschooling amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the time the TV presenter was homeschooling her kids Billy, 11, and Darcey, 15, she was also balancing looking after her husband Derek Draper who is said to have had the worst Covid infection of any surviving patient.

On Wednesday, Mrs Garraway confessed homeschooling proved “very, very challenging” in her family home with her “very specific set of circumstances”.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain about school exam grades, the breakfast TV star said children like everyone else have found the lockdowns tough.

She said: “It’s been almost impossible for youngsters to deal. It’s been an absolute struggle. I know that I have frankly failed my children in supporting them with their home schooling.

“I know I had a very specific set of circumstances going on for the bulk of the time, but I found it very difficult to get online and help them to work their way through the system.

“It was very, very challenging so I think maybe the teachers knew that and knew the potential and were trying to off weigh the mental challenges they had.”

Her co-host Ben Shephard also spoke about his own son Sam and felt the achievements of young people should not be “undermined.”

Mrs Garraway has shared her personal insight into her husband’s battle with Covid in ITV broadcast Finding Derek which explores Mr Draper’s illness and its effect on their two children.

Mr Draper has suffered from rare brain inflammation and the virus attacked his lungs, heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas.

He returned to his family home in April after spending more than a year in hospital.

While he has been able to speak a few words since returning home, Mrs Garraway previously admitted her husband is still “devastated” by the effects of Covid.
