Kate Garraway says she 'feels awkward' about receiving honour

Kate Garraway has said that she feels "awkward" about being awarded an MBE.

The 54-year-old was given the gong in the New Year's Honours after documenting her husband Derek Draper's battle with coronavirus.

She appeared on Good Morning Britain to discuss her achievement alongside show hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Bacon.

Susanna and Richard congratulated Kate and asked her how it felt to get the letter to tell her that she had been awarded an honour.

She replied: "I actually feel really awkward about all it really - I don't know why because I'm really honoured."

Kate went on to explain how she received a letter asking her if she would accept an honour without having too many details about what it was actually for.

Kate Garraway appeared on GMB to discuss her MBE (ITV)

She claimed that she said yes "to whatever it was" but then she heard nothing further.

The TV presenter continued: "And then there was something in the papers a couple of weeks before Christmas and I thought 'well I haven't heard'

"And then on the 30th I got a letter... from Buckingham Palace. On the outside it said MBE so I thought 'it must be that'. On the inside it said congratulations.

"So I thought well it must be true. But I couldn't quite believe it until New Year's Eve."

Susanna asked : "Can I just establish - do you mean to say you read it in the paper before you knew you'd been given it?"

Kate replied: "Yes basically. They had sent a letter asking would you accept but I thought is that a bit like the reality TV rewards? I didn't know if that meant I'd got it or what.

"I didn't tell anybody. I didn't even tell my parents because I didn't want to tempt fate."

She stated that people have questioned why she has been awarded the MBE when many people also look after their own loved ones.

Kate explained: "I haven't got it for looking after Derek - it is for broadcasting and also for charity work.

"There's lots of people that you feel deserve it more so it's a strange feeling.

"For some of those people that said 'I'm a carer and I don't get this' I hope I can use my job to shine a light on the challenges that you face."
