Kate Garraway says husband Derek's journey is 'far from over' as she explains social media absence

Kate Garraway said her husband Derek Draper's journey is "far from over" as she explained her social media absence.

The Good Morning Britain presenter had not been on Instagram since December, but returned with a lengthy statement.

She wrote: "Hello everyone - I've not been on here for a while as I've been taking time to gather myself and focus like everyone else on getting through this latest lockdown.

"The pandemic is far from over and so is Derek’s journey but I have decided to share our story and what's helping to keep me going, as we all try to work out what our new futures will look like."

Derek spent three months in an induced coma after being infected last March and in November, mouthed his first word for six months.

He no longer has Covid but remains in hospital, where he continues to recover slowly from the effects of the virus.

Kate is releasing a book, entitled The Power Of Hope, which will detail the tough time her family has been through due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

She added: "I am really hoping that it will help you with all that you are going through. You can pre-order your copy of The Power of Hope from Amazon."

Derek, 53, has been in hospital for months after contracting the disease.

He's lost eight stone in weight, developed diabetes and suffered holes in his lungs and heart after the disease ravaged his body.

Kate, also 53, who shares children Darcey and Billy with Derek, said: "I hope to be able to reach out to others who are suffering."

Kate's book will be a "raw and emotional" diary of Derek's battle with Covid-19. It's due for release in April.

She said: "While my experience of Covid is extreme and extraordinary, I’m only too aware that this virus has impacted every single one of us. We’re all going through this, to some degree.

"By telling the story of Derek’s illness and how it has altered our family’s lives, I hope to be able to reach out to others who are suffering.

"If writing about my experience of facing fear, coping daily with an uncertain future and finding strength for the sake of my kids can help another person feeling lost or in despair, it’ll mean a lot."
