Kate Garraway says husband Derek 'is still battling to say alive' as she takes to doorstep to applaud NHS heroes

Kate Garraway gave an emotional update on her husband Derek Draper who is battling coronavirus - as she took to her doorstep to applaud our NHS Heroes.

The Good Morning Britain host's husband has been in ICU since March having contractred COVID-19.

On Thursday evening at 8pm, Kate and her children joined families up and down the country as they stood outside their house in support of NHS staff, the Mirror reports.

Kate, 52, banged a saucepan and gave a warm smile to the camera.

After sharing a video on Instagram, Kate said: "So much to be grateful for tonight. Derek is still with us, but what a battle it is.

"So grateful too for our amazing #nhs doing so much for Derek everyday - wonderful to see all the support for them & our key workers every Thursday.

"We can’t thank them enough can we? So brave.

"Sending love to everyone during this ghastly time , particularly all those struggling for whatever reason- none of this is easy.

"Thank you so much for your messages - they mean so much to me. . Love and so much thanks from me and the whole family. X #staypositive#hope#standtogether#nhs."

Kate previously described the situation as 'the hardest time of her life'. She is looking after children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 10, at home while Derek remains critically-ill in hospital.

The presenter, who has been married to Derek since 2004, said she was trying her best to stay strong for her family.

"There are of course moments when I feel exhausted to my bones and I just have to rest but that's okay too," she said.

"This is an absolutely heartbreaking and emotionally draining time for so many of us.

"And of course, I am hugging the kids whether they like it or not and looking after them is of course a top priority."

Kate has been inundated with support from her Good Morning Britain family and from viewers who have been wishing for Derek to get better.

Earlier this week, the TV star gave her heartfelt thanks to her 'wonderful' fans as they lit candles for Derek.
