Kate Garraway says husband Derek has lost all muscles in arms and legs after staggering weight loss

Kate Garraway has giving more of an insight into her husband Derek Draper's condition after coronavirus "wreaked havoc" on his body.

The former Labour lobbyist, 53, was admitted to hospital last March and is now thought to be one of the longest Covid-19 inpatients as he remains in a prolonged disorder of consciousness.

Good Morning Britain star Kate has now revealed that all the muscles in arms and legs are gone after staggering eight-stone weight loss.

Referring to his physical condition, Kate told the Mirror : "He has changed. Derek is physically very affected.

"His legs are like sticks, he has no muscle left. In terms of his movement, he’s physically affected."

Derek will be seen in his hospital bed and speaking on Facetime with Kate as part of her new ITV documentary called, Finding Derek, which airs tomorrow night (Tuesday).

The documentary will offer viewers an intimate look and unflinching account of the profound effects the pandemic has had on her family.

Kate has, however, been unable to visit her husband since Christmas.

"Things have regressed a little bit this year since January," Kate told the publication. "But how much that is to do with the restrictions of not being able to visit, is unclear.

"It felt like we were moving forward at Christmas, now it feels like we’ve slipped back.

"And I’ve felt like I’m sort of hanging over the side of a ship, trying to hold onto him, so that when he kind of bobs up from this ocean of unconsciousness, you can see him sort of click in and you don’t know whether it’s because he can suddenly find a way to get out."

She added: "But he comes up and you feel you have filled him up with as much positivity as possible: 'You’re going to be fine. You’re going to come home. It’s going to be okay'.

“Even if you don’t really know if that’s true. But I just think I just want him to know that so that when he disappears back down, he's got some hope there."

Documentary viewers will also see that Kate has overhauling the ground floor of their London home so Derek could use it when he comes home.

She has made it wheelchair accessible and already has a hospital bed in the lounge which will be his new bedroom.
