Kate Garraway says her friendship with supportive Piers will go on

Kate Garraway has defended her GMB co-star Piers Morgan saying he has been very supportive of her as she faces extreme difficulties with her husband still in hospital after contracting Covid.

Kate's husband Derek Draper, 53, remains in hospital after being admitted in March last year.

TV presenter Garraway is to release a book about the “raw and emotional story” of Draper’s “long fight” against Covid-19 titled The Power Of Hope.

In October, Garraway confirmed that Draper, a former lobbyist and political adviser, was able to breathe without a ventilator and had mouthed his first word.

The couple married in 2005 and have a daughter and a son.

Talking about the fact Piers has quit GMB after a row over his comments on Meghan Markle, host Ben Shephard said to Kate: "He's been very supportive to you and the family through everything that you're going through with Derek."

She replied: "That's the thing about Piers isn't it. He is very passionate, he does fly kites and have debates but it always comes from a place of authenticity - he always believes in what he says.

"And he's left, he's decided to quit and as he put it himself 'fall on the sword of free speech'.

"And as you rightly say I've known him a long time before he started working on this programme. Our friendship will go on, our personal friendship. He's been very supportive of me personally."
