Kate Garraway says her children have 'effectively lost their dad' as she gives heartbreaking update on husband Derek Draper

An emotional Kate Garraway said that her children had 'effectively lost their dad' as she returned to Good Morning Britain today.

The 53-year-old presenter returned to the show after it was revealed at the weekend that her husband Derek Draper had come out of his coma following his coronavirus battle.

She fought back tears and said she was 'so emotional' to be back on the show.

Kate said that although Derek has fought off the deadly virus, his body has been significantly damaged and he may never recover.

She told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid that her children Darcy, 14, and Billy, 10, had 'effectively lost their dad'.

"The doctors do keep saying it is a miracle that he's still alive", Kate said.

"I was speaking to a doctor who has treated him in two of the hospitals that he's been in and he said that he's as sick as anyone he has ever seen in 35 years of medicine never mind COVID.

"There are people that are in the same situation as me who had loved ones taken much earlier.

"The situation for me now is that the doctors say to me 'you've got to get on, you've get to get on with life'.

"For Darcy and Billy, right now effectively they've lost their dad.

"They haven't, he's there, we're talking to him on FaceTime but he can't respond. He's not a presence in the way that he should be in our lives."

The I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here 2019 finalist explained that Derek was in a 'a minimum state of consciousness' at the moment'.

Doctors put him in a coma on April 5, but Kate said he now 'can't wake up'.

"He was induced into the coma because it's what they were doing then as a way of resting lungs when people had very acute COVID", Kate said.

"Now they're no longer keeping him in the coma and he sort of can't wake up.

"And I don't want to get too medical, but there's two types of coma, one we think of as a vegetative coma where someone is completely unconscious, you could stab them and they wouldn't react.

"And then there's where Derek is which is a minimum state of conciousness.

"Wonderfully his eyes are opening. But we have no real knowledge of what he can see and feel and hear.

"It is a very desperate situation, it's very very difficult, of course there's fantastic hope that he's still alive."

Piers Morgan praised the presenter for having a 'where there is life there is hope' mentality.

Kate also revealed that she is planning to return to work on Good Morning Britain on Monday.

"The doctors have been urging me not to put my life on pause," she added.

"They've told me that I need to go back to work and create a routine in our lives again.

"The children and Derek are all I've thought about and they're the most important people in my life, but I must create structure and normality for the children, to clean the bath, put the plates in the dishwasher, and tidy the house."
