Kate Garraway says doctors unsure why coronavirus has affected husband Derek 'so badly'

Kate Garraway has revealed doctors did not think her husband Derek Draper would survive his coroanvirus battle.

He is still fighting for his life in a coma in intensive care, but is now coronavirus free after beating the virus.

Derek is still very unwell and "may not recover" because of the damage the virus has done to his body from "head to toe".

Kate wept as she spoke on Good Morning Britain on Friday, and shared how her husband, "the core of her life" is doing as she hopes and prays he will wake up.

Derek was taken to hospital after suffering with severe breathlessness, and eventually placed into an induced coma due to the effect on his lungs.

Kate revealed he has suffered "extraordinary" and "incredibly rare" damage to his body which may be difficult to recover from.

Kate also detailed the symptoms that Derek was experiencing prior to his hospital dash.

But doctors are completely unaware of why the virus has affected Derek the way it has, and why he suffered from it so badly.

Kate said her husband didn't have underlying health conditions, but the virus still "raged" through his body.

The damage it has done has left doctors so clueless as to why, that they weren't even sure he would survive initially.

Kate explained on the show of whether they knew why he was so affected: "We don’t, he had none of the underlying health concerns.

"He just got it very, very, very badly and we don’t know why. When you speak to the doctors, there’s so many things they tell you about to help you understand what he’s going through.

"There’s various markers that tell you how much infection is in his body when it was really raging.

"At one point, he was being transferred to a different hospital, there’s an enzyme the liver produces which goes up when you’re fighting infection, healthy it would be under 10, if it goes up to 200 then you’re really sick.

"When Derek was admitted to the second hospital, he was 1286. He was off the scale with infection. His lungs were solid and nobody thought he’d live.

"So it’s just extraordinary he’s still here, I’m so proud of him and most of all, the doctors and nurses around him are just incredible.

"They’re incredible with what they’ve done, with a disease they’re learning about every day."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
