Kate Garraway says Derek is now 'saying some words' but still needs 24-hour care

Kate Garraway has revealed that her husband Derek Draper is finally able to say some words over a year after contracting Covid-19.

The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain star, who has been supporting her husband at every point of his recovery, revealed on ITV that Derek has achieved some 'miraculous' steps in recent weeks.

It comes after Derek was finally able to return home to continue his recovery surrounded by his loved ones.

Speaking to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on This Morning, Kate revealed that Derek has been able to form some words but it is not a conversation just yet.

The mum of two also added that Derek still requires 24-hour care from a specialised team of medics that help at the house.

"For a long period, he was in the induced coma and then in the middle of the summer last year they realised that he was just in a coma and he couldn't wake up," Kate told the presenters, according to Lincolnshire Live.

"And then there was a huge period through the autumn of hoping and trying to get some response - and now, you know, there are things that he does that are miraculous.

Kate added: "He remembers extraordinary things. He's saying some words - but it's definitely not a conversation and he's physically very changed. Everything has to be done for him.

The television star admitted that the family have a very 'different life' now but is pleased that Derek has been able to return home.

She went on: "He needs 24-hour care and not even care that I could do, even if I could stay awake for 24 hours - which sometimes, in these jobs, we've had a crack at.

"But, even if I could be awake for 24 hours, I couldn't do it because it's specific medical stuff."

After more than a year in hospital, Derek was allowed home earlier this month.

He has been taken off all machines and breathing apparatus but still receives care at home, which Kate adapted to make more accessible. The mum of two has completely transformed the ground floor of her home in order to facilitate her husband's return.
