Kate Garraway's year from hell as husband Derek Draper fights for life

Kate Garraway has been through a year of hell as her husband Derek Draper remains in hospital a year after being admitted with coronavirus.

Derek went into hospital on March 30, 2020 with covid-19 and he battled to stay alive as a worried Kate, 53, tried to keep life normal for their two children Darcey, 14 and Billy, 11.

Political adviser Derek managed to fight off covid, but his body has been ravaged by the virus and he now has multiple serious health issues.

Kate is set to front a documentary next week focusing on how the family have tried to adjust to a new way of life.

In the programme Kate will let cameras see the real story behind the headlines and the struggles the family has been through.

GMB star Kate will also speak to other families who've been effected by coronavirus, including a woman called Julie whose husband Steve has still not regained consciousness after contracting the disease.

Ahead of the documentary we took a look back at all the Garraway family have been forced to face over the past year.

Kate first revealed that Derek was battling coronavirus on April 3 after he was admitted to hospital on March 30.

Derek didn't have the initial typical symptoms at all, like a fever and cough, and instead had numbness in his hand - while also experiencing headaches and breathlessness.

Kate called Dr Hilary Jones for advice, who told her to call an ambulance immediately after Derek struggled to hold his breath for longer than ten seconds.

He was rushed to intensive care and was said to be "seriously ill" with the virus and put into an induced coma.

A representative for Kate said at the time: "Kate's husband, Derek Draper, has been taken to hospital and is being treated in intensive care with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

"He was admitted on Monday and has since tested positive for the virus.

"Kate, hasn't been tested, however she has also been displaying mild symptoms, also since Monday, and as a result has been on strict isolation with her children at home."

An "excruciatingly worrying time"

On April 10 Kate said there had been no change in Derek's condition and Kate called it an "excruciatingly worrying time" for her family.

In a statement, she said: "Derek remains in intensive care and is still very ill. I'm afraid it remains an excruciatingly worrying time.

"The NHS team who have been working on him have all been extraordinary and I know that it's only their professionalism, dedication and bravery that has kept Derek with us so far.

"I also know that they're working just as hard on all the patients in their care."

A week later Kate said Derek was in a "deeply critical" condition in intensive care.

She told her Instagram followers: "I'm afraid he is still in a deeply critical condition, but he is still here, which means there is hope."

Fighting for life in a coma

Derek was in a critical condition for the next few weeks and then Kate's GMB co-host Ben Shephard revealed he was in a coma.

Ben said: "She's wanted to share the fact that she's been able to speak with Derek in the evenings in a coma.

"She's been able to share music with him, talk to him and support him.

"It's tough, it's really, really tough because he's critically ill."

Kate wrote to her followers: "The journey for me and my family seems to be far from over as everyday my heart sinks as I learn new & devastating ways this virus has more battles for Derek to fight.

"But he is still HERE & so there is still hope."

Derek 'may never recover'

In June Kate returned to Good Morning Britain to give an update on Derek's condition and she revealed that her husband may never recover.

Despite Derek being covid free the virus had "affected him from the top of his head to the bottom of his toes".

Kate said that an MRI scan showed "he has damage everywhere, holes in his heart, his liver is impacted, and his pancreas . . . well, he’s now very, very diabetic which he wasn't before".

Kate added: "He's been on kidney dialysis because his kidneys stopped functioning. And his nerves and his neurology have been affected by the virus, but the impact and the damage of that, they don’t yet know.

"He's still being given breathing support, but the hope is that each day he will need less. They are watching him constantly, it’s like spinning plates. But whatever happens, we’re looking at months and months of rehabilitation."

Doctors also warned that he could be unconscious forever.

Derek regains consciousness

Derek was taken out of his induced coma in July, but didn't regain consciousness straight away.

Kate told Hello! magazine: "I really believe he can hear. When medical staff say, 'Good morning, Derek,' he sometimes opens his eyes. We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover."

But doctors warned that Derek could be in a "minimum state of consciousness" for years.

Kate revealed how he'd lost a "huge amount of weight" and "looked so different" after nurses shaved the long beard he'd grown while in hospital.

Kate shared that she had been told on six separate occasions that Derek was dying.

Missed birthdays and anniversaries

In August Kate took a few days off GMB as she struggled to cope with Derek's absence as he turned 53.

September was Derek and Kate's 15th wedding anniversary and she admitted it was a "tough" day, especially because she couldn't visit him in hospital.

Kate said on GMB: "It's actually Derek and I's wedding anniversary today, unbelievably - 15 years today.

"What an extraordinary thing. I won't be able to see him today, I kind of hoped I would but it wouldn't work out that way for a visit… But maybe it would be a bit strange anyway.

"So yeah, it's a tough day but he's still here. There's not a huge amount of change."

Derek utters his first word

Derek finally spoke in October after over 200 days in hospital.

Derek said: "Pain" as doctors manipulated his body and sobbing Kate watched online.

Kate said: "We have had a breakthrough which was both amazing yet heartbreaking.

“It happened when the nurses were moving Derek, as part of his treatment, to trigger the sensation of gravity because he's been horizontal for so long.

“Obviously it’s so heart-wrenching that his first word was ‘pain’, but it is a huge breakthrough because it means he has been able to connect the feeling in his body to his brain and mouth."

Christmas without Derek

Derek remained in hospital for Christmas, but Kate revealed that she and the children had been able to see him during the festive period.

Kate said there was a "lovely moment" when Darcey and Billy were given the chance to see their dad.

Speaking on GMB Kate said: "Christmas was tough, wasn't it? For everyone.

"I knew it was going to be tough. There was a lovely moment which we did have over the period, we got to see Derek and the children did, which was the first time they were able to do that.

"And of course it was very heightened with emotion because he has so changed.

"It kind of amplified how very sad it was and how different it is."

"No end in sight"

In February Kate revealed on GMB that she hadn't seen Derek in person since Christmas.

Kate said: "I haven't been able to see him since Christmas, we're back into situation of looking at strangers in masks.

"That’s the situation for everybody at the moment. It’s tough. When you’re someone like him, dealing with a consciousness problem and trying to emerge, I can't help but fear it’s not helpful. There’s no end in sight to that. There’s no one to blame or be angry with. It’s tough."

Kate feels like she's 'trying to hold onto her husband"

Kate Garraway speaks on The One Show (BBC)

In March before her documentary Kate appeared on The One Show and was visibly emotional as she opened up about the reality of the last 12 months and Derek's current state.

Kate said: "This time last year, I was like a lot of us, wondering what was coming our way, fearing the worst and on air reading headlines about the earliest cases of people contracting coronavirus.

"And then suddenly I found myself right in the middle of it."

Kate said she spent "months living minute by minute, thinking I was going to get the call saying whether he was going to live or die".

Describing Derek's current condition, Kate said she felt like she is on a lifeboat trying to hold on to her husband.

She said: "He bubbles up and you have some kind of contact - predominantly at the moment on Facetime because of the Covid restrictions - and it feels like you're having to fill him with so much positivity because he's going to sink down."
