Kate Garraway's wedding and marriage to Derek Draper

Kate Garraway left people heartbroken this week as they watched her documentary Finding Derek which followed her husband Derek Draper's battle with coronavirus.

The ITV show featured distressing scenes which saw Derek mouth the word pain and he also broke down in tears at one point and then admitted he no longer saw the point in living.

But away from the tough scenes there were also glimpses of the couple's incredible love for one another, with Kate promising she would "save" him and Derek telling her how much he loved her.

There was also video footage from the couple's wedding, which saw them gaze into each others eyes and beam.

Derek has been left with multiple health issues and remains in hospital, despite being covid free.

But Kate has adapted their home in London to enable him to come home when he's slightly better, proving her unshakeable love for him.

With this in mind we decided to take a look back at how the couple met and their marriage.

How did Kate Garraway and Derek Draper meet?

Kate and Derek first met in 2004 after being introduced through a mutual friend, former GMTV political editor Gloria De Piero.

But it was far from love at first sight with Kate admitting she wasn't too bothered about her now husband at first.

Speaking to The Times, Kate said: “Derek arrived thinking it was a date and that I was being incredibly cool by ignoring him.”

But when she did agree to go on actual date with him, he tried to cancel, saying he had a clash.

She continued: “He asked me out, but the day of our date called to say he had a clash.

“He’d promised to serve wine at an amateur watercolour painting exhibition at his church.

“I really thought it was a wind-up. But I turned up and he was indeed serving wine to the congregation in a salmon-pink jumper.”

Derek's act managed to win Kate over and they were soon inseparable.

Derek also helped to care for Kate at the start of their relationship when she was in and out of hospital suffering with a kidney cyst, proving he was a keeper.

When did Kate Garraway and Derek Draper get married?

Kate and Derek got married just a year after they started dating in 2005.

The couple married at a low-key ceremony with Kate wearing a Caroline Castigliano wedding dress.

But there was a surprise guest at the wedding in the form of Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole.

Speaking to The Times in November 2020 Kate said: "Hilariously, Brendan Cole was at the wedding, years before I did Strictly Come Dancing.

“I assumed he was someone’s boyfriend, but Derek had secretly been having dancing lessons with him.

"Derek is like that: when he wants to learn something, he studies it until he can do it perfectly."

Kate Garraway and Derek Draper's children

Kate and Derek have two children, Darcey, 15 and Billy, 11.

Kate has previously admitted how difficult she has found home schooling the children, especially with Derek away.

In the documentary both children speak about how they miss their father, but that they enjoyed spending time with him at Christmas and playing board games with him in hospital.

Kate Garraway and Derek Draper's plan to renew their wedding vows

Kate and Derek were due to renew their wedding vows last year, following Kate's stint in the I'm A Celebrity jungle.

When the pair were reunited Derek got down on one knee and proposed to Kate again.

The initial plan was for him to do it in front of the cameras, but he was too emotional as they initially reunited.

Kate later explained to You : “When Derek came to meet me after I left the jungle, he was planning to propose to me again [with the ring, in front of the TV cameras], but he got overwhelmed and burst into tears.

“The kids leapt out and surprised me, and Darcey said, “Oh Dad – you didn’t do it!” So he got down on one knee and proposed… and I said yes, obviously.”

But sadly their vow renewal has not happened as a result of Derek’s battle with coronavirus.
