Kate Garraway's update on husband Derek Draper after return to GMB following family Covid scare

Kate Garraway has returned to work after two weeks and offered an update on husband Derek Draper's condition.

Former lobbyist and political adviser Derek, 53, remains in hospital following a battle with coronavirus.

He is now free from the virus but it has "wreaked havoc" on his body, Kate has previously said.

The Good Morning Britain star returned to the news programme on Thursday after last being seen on screen last month.

Kate explained to viewers, alongside co-host Ben Shephard, that her children having a coronavirus scare at school after they came into contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19.

Therefore she has been self-isolating alongside Billy, 11, and 14-year-old Darcy, and until they received negative tests.

Ben welcomed his friend and co-star back, to which Kate explained her absence and gave an update on Derek: "It is lovely to be back! Sorry I've been absent.

"Few challenges kicking off, going on, challenges with Derek as there always are.

"Outside Derek, we also had another scare as children came into contact with someone - who did not get ill - that had a positive test.

"I kept them both and home and me too until we had negative tests, we had two negative tests."

She shared her first worry and added: "I thought this was difficult and going to be horrific if we got it and got ill."

Kate, who tested positive for Covid, back in March, added: "I had it back in March.

"Way back in March no one offered us a coronavirus test, it just wasn't available. We were all being told to stay at home."

She added: "We are all fine and safe I just wanted to make sure I kept you safe Ben Shepard! For your sake, the crew's sake and global radio's sake."

Kate also opened up about the challenge of Christmas, admitting her "dream" is for her and the kids to see Derek on Christmas Day.

She also said she wanted "to avoid" it being just herself, Darcy and Billy over the festive period as she feels "that would make Derek's absence feel huge and the rest of the family’s absence feel huge."
