Kate Garraway's tragic revelation after 'fighting' to get Derek on successful drugs trial

Kate Garraway has opened up about how her husband Derek Draper was incredibly unlucky after being involved in a drugs trial to treat coronavirus.

The 53-year-old presenter appeared in the Good Morning Britain studio today for the first time as she spoke about husband Derek waking up from a coma.

She revealed that she had "fought" to get him on a trial to receive a drug which was later proven to help coronavirus patients - but discovered that he had been the control sample, meaning that he never received the treatment.

Kate told presenters Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan: "The doctors are doing everything they can and I'm not a doctor and things have changed.

"There have been times where he has been very lucky and he's had treatment at the right moment, which has given him another chance to live and there have been other times when he was very unlucky.

"Like with some of the trials we know have been helpful... there was one point when I was fighting to get him on a trial - I talked to you both about it - and it hadn't been approved yet.

"And then when it was approved, he came out as the control, so he was the one in the trial who didn't get it."

She added: "By the time that he could get it, it was too late.

"So there have been a lot of that sort of frustration, but he's also had a huge amount of luck. His heart stopped and they got it going."

Explaining that Derek was in a "a minimum state of consciousness" at the moment, she said: "His eyes are opening but we don't know what state of consciousness he has."

Kate revealed that she had spoken to a doctor at the hospital: "They that that [he] was sick as anyone [they've] seen in 35 years of working here".

She added: "Six times they said 'He's not going to make it'".

"It is a very desperate situation, its very difficult situation," she continued. "It is a miracle he's still alive."

She also became emotional as she spoke about her children.

"Darcey and Billy have effectively lost their dad," she said. "Oh god, I'm going to cry... it was such a happy time after the jungle."
