Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper has Christmas scare during 'bumpy' 24 hours

Kate Garraway has shared that her husband Derek Draper required medical attention after a "scare" over the Christmas period.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, whose husband returned home in April after more than a year in hospital after being struck down with Covid-19, opened up about the family's "bumpy" 24 hours on Instagram.

On Christmas Day, Kate shared a sweet picture of Derek and their children Darcey and Billy and wrote: "So the last 24 hours has been bumpy.

"A scare that meant Derek might have had to go back into hospital ( thankfully sorted by a visit from nurse/carer), he has also had one of his ultra fatigue days so has been too weak to do much other than sleep.

"I burnt the parsnips ( Darceys favourite ) & got the 'wrong' Lego for Billy.

"But now snuggled up around Dad's bed watching #nativity everything feels suddenly perfect. Feel so grateful to have the chance to be together.

"Sending love & hoping you have found some joy today whatever your circumstances - #merrychristmas all!"

The 54-year-old was instantly flooded with support, with GMB co-star Ranvir Singh writing: "I hope you sat down immediately after taking this photo and let those wings rest.

"You are their guardian Angel … and you have superhuman powers of endurance. But even superheroes need to take breath my love. God bless them and you."

It comes after Kate revealed the "biggest gift" this year was being able to spend Christmas at home with Derek as she reflected on how far her husband has come.

Speaking about a "little moment" the family recently shared, she said: "He still has extraordinary problems with communication, mobility is very limited, massive problems with fatigue and sometimes, he doesn't go unconscious at all, it's the wrong word, but it's like he's not present with you.

"And we were playing a silly, silly game, one of those moral question games and it asked 'who is most likely to find money on the floor and keep it?'.

"We were playing it in his bedroom so that he could still be part of it," she went on. "And everyone in the room, which was my mum and dad, Darcey, Billy and myself, all said at the same time, 'Darcey!' and he started to laugh.

"And it was just the most lovely moment. He does get it, he does understand and he's right! Because she is the most likely to find money and keep it!

"You get these extraordinary flashes which create a huge sense of hope and that has to sustain you in the periods when it feels like there's never going to be any change."
