Kate Garraway's heartbreaking hospital call that made her 'throw up'

Good Morning Britain favourite Kate Garraway has spoken of a devastating phone call from the hospital during her husband's fight for life that made her physically sick.

The popular presenter said she "threw up" when a doctor gave her the stark news that her husband Derek Draper - who remains in a coma - might never wake up or recover from the damage he has sustained from coronavirus.

Speaking in an interview with The Sun, Ms Garraway said she was told that, with death being the worst case scenario, the second worst-case scenario would be that the situation does not change and he is "locked in this for ever".

“I threw up, there and then," she said. "People had said to me before that they thought he was going to die, but not that he might stay in this state.

“It’s like a second level of loss. We may lose him even if we don’t lose him. If he doesn’t wake up, then he’s sort of lost anyway . . . not that I’d love him any less or ever give up."

On Friday, the presenter gave an emotional update during Good Morning Britain on her 52-year-old husband's condition, explaining that while he is now actually free of Covid-19, the virus has wreaked "extraordinary damage" upon his body.

She also didn't want to scare viewers, saying that the damage her husband sustained is "incredibly rare".

Her moving update touched both her ITV colleagues and fans who have been showing their support on social media during the near-10 long weeks Mr Draper has been struck down by coronavirus.

One woman wrote on Twitter on Saturday: "I've never cried so much as I did listening to Kate yesterday morning - so brave and dignified!

"My thoughts and love are with all of the Garraway family and I'm saying special heartfelt prayers for Derek's recovery."
