Kate Garraway's emotional family reunion with Derek home as kids cried with happiness

Kate Garraway made an emotional appearance on Good Morning Britain on Friday as she discussed her husband Derek Draper returning home.

Derek, 53, was first admitted into hospital in March 2020 after contracting coronavirus and has finally been sent home to reunite with Kate and their two children, Darcey and Billy.

Speaking to her GMB colleagues Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh, Kate opened up about Derek's first night back at their London home.

Kate was in a great spirits as she chatted away in her kitchen, but admitted: “It does feel like the hospital as come home with me at the moment."

Kate revealed that their living room is now Derek's bedroom and he's brought "a lot of kit with him".

Kate recalled the emotional moment Derek arrived home and how their two kids reacted.

"I could see two little faces looking out the window," Kate explained.

Darcey and Billy then ran outside and burst into tears, with Kate adding: "That's when he knew he was home."

She said the children were very excited throughout the rest of the day as they played in the garden and kept running back up to the house to speak to Derek.

Kate said they are currently in the process of organising a timetable for Derek and his upcoming and much needed therapy.

"It’s going to be very slow I’m afraid," she said of his progress. "So, the physiotherapy and the occupational therapy, speech and language therapy..."

Kate also admitted that it's going to be a long road ahead, adding: "He can’t really move, we do need a lot of help."

Her update comes after she shared her story with the nation in a heartbreaking ITV documentary called Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, which aired last month.

Kate and her two kids - 11-year-old Billy and 15-year-old Darcey - have reportedly been warned that Derek still faces a “long and gruelling” fight to full health but they are all "thrilled" that he is allowed to continued his recovery in their home environment.

Kate has been open with fans that Derek's recovery will be a slow process as the virus "attacked everything", leaving him with clots in his lungs, holes in his heart and made him diabetic, and doctors have warned Kate that Derek might never fully recover from the damage done to his body.
