Kate Garraway reveals she tried to give husband Derek Draper her blood plasma after recovering from Covid-19 herself

Kate Garraway has revealed how she tried to donate her own blood plasma to help her husband, Derek Draper.

The Good Morning Britain host shared the news during today's instalment of the show as she said it had been a tough few weeks for Derek.

Doctors had told Kate to be grateful her husband has not taken a step back, following his ongoing battles health problems caused after suffering from Coronavirus.

Kate told viewers that last Monday's visit was "extra emotional" and a particularly "tough visit" as it was her son Billy's birthday.

She said she had been thinking about when Billy was born and how although Derek was present, he was unable to really be there in the moment.

Explaining her attempts to help her husband out, she said: "Something I saw which intrigued me was this call out from the government for people to come forward to donate blood, so they can make use of blood plasma. Those who have had Covid and recovered.

"When Derek was very seriously affected by the virus – as in the virus was active, not as he is now – towards the end of April, I was looking for anything that might be able to help."

She added: "I said to the doctors, 'Could I donate my blood? I've had it, I seem to have recovered. Would antibodies that I have be helpful to him?'

"They said, 'We are months away from being able to be confident that we could, in a sense, clean your blood enough to make sure that only the good antibodies were going in.'

"We know plasma has been really helpful now. And more recently, Derek has had plasma exchanged, to try to support the cleaning up of the system."

Derek's recovery will be a slow process as the virus has "attacked everything", Kate has said.

This has left him with clots in his lungs, holes in his heart and has made him diabetic.

Doctors have warned Kate that Derek might never recover from the damage done to his body.
