Kate Garraway reveals husband Derek was rushed to hospital after she received MBE

Kate Garraway has revealed her husband Derek Draper was taken to hospital after she received an MBE last week. The presenter, 56, was officially handed the honour last Wednesday (June 28) in recognition of her services to broadcasting, journalism and charity.

Derek, 55, attended the ceremony to support his wife in a rare public appearance. He was visibly moved by the occasion with Kate admitting it was an "extraordinary" occasion.

As reported by Birmingham Live, the ITV Good Morning Britain star said on Instagram: "Well what a week, that started with Derek in hospital and ended with Derek in hospital, but with this extraordinary day in the middle. I am so incredibly moved and humbled by the whole experience.

"So many of you have sent so many lovely messages, including the lady who stopped her car a few minutes ago outside our house to say 'I know what you’re going through, and I know how much that moment meant and I am a nurse.'

"It was so wonderful to see Derek’s determination to be there. so kind of the Prince of Wales, to make it special for him and to recognise the work of Jake our incredible carer, who represents all those who make Derek’s daily life possible. And of course my long-suffering mum and dad. It was also so humbling to meet all the others, much more deserving than myself, who were there to receive their honours. The Prince of Wales managed to make every single one of them feel as special as they are.

"Tomorrow Derek is back in hospital and of course the daily struggles go on - but the fact that he was able to be part of Wednesday is to be treasured and I can’t thank everyone in the NHS and all around him who love him for making it possible. I have so many thanks to give but I must make sure I thank @lisaredmanltd for the loan of my 'fit for a king dress' and @missbsmillinery for its matching hat.!!

Kate Garraway said she was ‘thrilled to bits’ and ‘incredibly honoured’ to be made an MBE (Jonathan Brady/PA)

"Love to you all and happy Sunday." Reacting last year to news of the accolade, 56-year-old Garraway said on Good Morning Britain: "I actually feel very awkward about it all really, I don't know why, because I'm thrilled to bits and incredibly honoured.

"But you just sort of think 'What? Me?', and then you think it's not real." She also admitted she had received some negative comments about the honour, saying: "I think it has (evoked) strange feelings. And there have been a few comments since it was announced of people saying 'Why has she got this? I look after my loved one'.

"I haven't got it for looking after Derek. It is for broadcasting and I think also charity work. But you know there's lots of people that you feel deserve it more. So it's a strange feeling."
