Kate Garraway reveals husband Derek's painful recovery has had 'worrying setbacks'

Kate Garraway has revealed that husband Derek Draper has had a 'worrying setback' as he battles to recover from coronavirus.

The virus has so far confined Derek to a hospital bed for more than six months after the former Labour aide first showed symptoms at the end of March.

After being taken into hospital, his condition declined at an alarming rate, with doctors putting him into a medically induced coma.

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate revealed in the summer that her other half was free from COVID-19 but broke down on air as she revealed that the devastating effects it had on his body, including his severe damage to several of his vital organs.

And now Kate has opened up about the setbacks Derek has had in his painful recovery.

When asked by GMB colleague how Derek was, Kate replied: "There are big ups and big downs, not big ups really, small improvements and worrying downs as well.

"But the last few days have been pretty stable, so keeping everything crossed really."

Derek's daughter and other relatives have still not seen him since he was admitted to hospital and, addressing just what a heartbreaking time it's been for the family, Kate added: "It's tough, it's very hard.

"You completely understand why hospitals have to do it, they have to protect those inside who may be recovering from Covid or maybe dealing with other serious conditions.

"But to do that, they have to decrease footfall, so Darcy hasn't been able to see Derek, his mum and dad haven't been able to see him for a long time now.

"The fact they live in Lancashire and that might go into tier two will have an effect because it will be very tough for them to argue the case to be able to visit. It is difficult."
