Kate Garraway reveals how she'll spend 'tough' first Christmas without Derek

Kate Garraway is facing one of the most difficult Christmases of her life this year as her husband Derek Draper remains in hospital after his battle with coronavirus.

The Good Morning Britain host, 53, has revealed how she's planning to spend this "tough" Christmas, and it'll be very different to how the family usually celebrates.

Derek, also 53, has been in hospital since he caught coronavirus in March, and while he's now free of the virus it has wreaked havoc on his body.

The couple and their two children, Darcey, 13, and 11-year-old Billy, normally go to Derek's family on Christmas Eve and then spend Christmas Day there, but this year they have to stay close to Derek in hospital.

She told Hello! magazine : "I'm lucky that Derek is still with us, and that we still have hope for next year, but it is quite hard to know how to really plan because we had very specific traditions that we would always go to Derek's family on Christmas Eve, we would go to church, we would be with his family on Christmas Day and then come back to my family and I don't think any of that will be possible because we need to stay close to Derek and the hospital."

Kate will be spending the day with her children after speaking to them about how they can't celebrate Christmas the way they normally do.

She continued: "I've been trying to talk to the children about sort of forming new traditions. I think we are going to try to have a 'Christmas Season' and accept that the day is going to be different, and so we will try and do lots of little things and sort of have a 'Christmas Season'."

In her typical upbeat style, Kate is remaining positive about the festive season.

She says Billy will be getting some Lego but she doesn't want to get Darcey the dog she's longing for just yet.

Kate added: "I don't know what will be happening on the day, yet, but we'll try and be as grateful as we can and make the best of it as we can."

Derek has been in hospital since March (PA)

Derek was hospitalised in March after contracting coronavirus and was later put into an induced coma which lasted 13 weeks.

Coronavirus left him with clots in his lungs, holes in his heart and made him diabetic, and doctors have warned Kate that Derek might never recover from the damage done to his body.

He woke up from the coma in July but he is still on a long road to recovery and remains in hospital.
