Kate Garraway reveals hope for Derek after personal announcement on GMB

Kate Garraway has set a hopeful target for husband Derek Draper after a personal announcement was made on Good Morning Britain.

The 54-year-old presenter was back at the helm of the ITV news programme on Tuesday morning alongside Charlotte Hawkins.

After discussing the latest coronavirus news headlines with Dr Hilary Jones, Charlotte turned to Kate and relayed how she knows all too well the impact the virus can have on an individual and their family.

Kate's husband Derek spent more than a year in hospital after contracting the virus in March 2020.

The former Labour lobbyist was placed into an induced coma shortly after being admitted to hospital after the virus 'wreaked havoc' on his body.

After being allowed home in April this year, Derek is now receiving around-the-clock care at their north London family home.

Viewers may remember that Kate fronted an intimate documentary, Finding Derek, which looked at how pandemic ravaged her family and showed Derek's condition in hospital for the first time.

The host also spoke to other long Covid sufferers for the one-off ITV programme.

On GMB on Tuesday, Charlotte revealed that Kate's documentary had been shortlisted for a National Television Award.

"We must mention, you have obviously got first-hand experience of dealing with the aftermath of coronavirus and what that can mean for someone, with Derek and the family," Charlotte explained.

"And congratulations to you, your authored documentary, 'Kate Garraway: Finding Derek', has been shortlisted for a National Television Award and very well deserved."

Kate said she didn't find out until she saw it in the papers this morning and said it was "wonderful" for the television company and for Derek.

She then went on to reveal her hopes for Derek as a result of the award nod.

"I was just thinking, I was just looking... the ceremony is the 9th of September it says there and wouldn't it be wonderful if Derek was well enough to come."

Kate added: "Wouldn't it be wonderful. I was trying to work out the dates and see the logistics how that might work."

She said she "didn't think for a moment" they'd win due to the other brilliant work in the category but commented: "It would just be lovely for him to be there, wouldn't it?

"I'll start planning how that might work."
