Kate Garraway reveals heartbreaking message husband gave her before he being put into coma

Kate Garraway has revealed the heartbreaking message Derek Draper gave her before he was out into a coma.

Nearly four months have now passed since writer and former Labour aide Derek was struck down by coronavirus and has remained in intensive care ever since.

He is now free of the virus but his organs have been left severely damaged and he remains largely unconscious, although earlier this week Kate said that he has opened his eyes and believes he can now hear her when she communicates with him via FaceTime.

Kate returned to the Good Morning Britain studio for the first time since Derek's illness on Wednesday and gave hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid an update on his condition.

She broken down in tears at one point during the interview as she admitted that her children Darcy and Billy had effectively 'lost their dad' and she also shared the message Derek gave her before doctors put him into a medically induced coma.

She revealed: "He said he felt like he was suffocating., he couldn't breathe and they were talking to him as to whether it was good to go into a coma or nor.

"He was saying please let them do it I can't take this. I said to him 'I'm talking to them, I'm talking to them.

"He said 'thank you, thank you. I'm sorry I've got to leave you it'll only be for three to five days. You saved my life and I don't just mean now, I mean in everything, with the children, their lives and everything."
