Kate Garraway returns to Good Morning Britain after broadcast of heartbreaking Finding Derek documentary

Kate Garraway returned to Good Morning Britain after her heartbreaking documentary on her husband’s long battle with Covid-19 was broadcast on ITV.

Millions watched Finding Derek on Tuesday night which followed Kate Garraway over the course of Derek Draper’s illness since he was admitted to hospital with coronavirus last March.

The ex-political adviser, 53, remains in hospital but Kate, also 53, has been praised by TV critics and viewers for the documentary, which she started work on last August.

Susanna Reid welcomed her back to the show alongside Adil Ray this morning and said: “This is the first time we have seen you since the extraordinary impact of your incredible documentary.

“My goodness, we were inundated yesterday morning with love and support for you from viewers who were, I think, blown away frankly by the story you have told.

“How have you felt that impact?

Kate Garraway replied: “It’s been absolutely overwhelming in a really wonderful way - I have received so many comments from people.

“It was a difficult decision to think about filming it but you hope that it would be of some comfort to people and perhaps shine a light on a situation of a group of people that may still be suffering in a way that has not been focused on.”

She said the reaction has been “extraordinary” and says people can contact her with their own experiences.

“I have had so many messages from people talking not just about covid but experiences in their own lives,” she added.

“Some people want to contact me directly actually because it’s quite personal.

“There are lots of things I would like to follow up on."
