Kate Garraway preparing for 'second worse scenario' - Derek trapped in coma forever

Kate Garraway has been told by doctors to prepare for a 'second worse case scenario' over her husband Derek - which would see him locked in a coma forever.

The Good Morning Britain host's husband fell ill with the coronavirus back in March. Despite fighting off the deadly virus, Derek - who has no underlying health conditions - was hit by multiple other health complications and had to be put into a coma.

His wife Kate has now revealed that doctors have told her to prepare that Derek might never wake up. "We may lose him even if we don't lose him," Kate told The Sun in her second interview of today.

She said doctors have been trying to bring Derek out of a coma for the last three weeks but he hasn't been able to regain consciousness.

"If you don’t regain consciousness in the first two or three days then that’s when they start talking about weeks, months, even a year," said Kate.

Derek has already been brought back to life once after his heart stopped and he now remains critically ill in intensive care.

Recalling a terrifying conversation with a doctor just two weeks ago, Kate said: "My first question, the one I always ask when the hospital call, was, ‘Is Derek still alive?’ and he said he was, but then asked me what my greatest fear was.

“I said, ‘Derek dying’ and he replied, ‘Well, now I think I have to give you a second worst case scenario, which is that he never changes from this. That he is locked in this for ever’. He said, ‘I’m not telling you this to scare you. It’s because we don’t know if he can recover. We’ll only know over the coming weeks and months’."

Kate said she was then shocked she threw up there and then.

The mum-of-two said she had been warned Derek could die but she never imagined he could remain in the state he's in.

Kate, 53, said it would feel like a second level of loss if that happened but she would never love Derek any less or give up on him.
