Kate Garraway praises 'amazing' NHS as she shares update on husband Derek Draper's 'battle' with coronavirus

Kate Garraway has given an update on the condition of her husband Derek Draper, who is in intensive care after contracting coronavirus.

The 52-year-old took to her Instagram to thank the NHS workers caring for Draper, also 52, during Thursday night’s Clap For Our Carers.

Sharing a video, the Good Morning Britain presenter wrote to her 704,000 followers: “So much to be grateful for tonight. Derek is still with us but what a battle it is.

“So grateful too for our amazing NHS doing so much for Derek everyday - wonderful to see all the support for them and our key workers every Thursday. We can’t thank them enough can we? So brave.”

She continued: “Sending love to everyone during this ghastly time, particularly all those struggling for whatever reason- none of this is easy.

“Thank you so much for your messages - they mean so much to me. Love and so much thanks from me and the whole family.”

Garraway shares two children with Draper, 13-year-old daughter Darcey and Billy, ten.

Her Good Morning Britain co-presenters Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh also discussed their colleague on today’s programme – and explained how Garraway was still managing to keep in contact with to her husband of 15 years as he battled Covid-19.

“Derek is getting extraordinary care,” Shephard told viewers. “She gets to phone him in the evenings and talk to him.”

“He’s not responding yet, to everything she’s saying,” Singh clarified. “But at least he can hear.”

To lighten the mood, Shephard quickly joked: “That’s pretty standard with Kate, anyway!”

Last week, 45-year-old Shephard, who usually hosts with Garraway on a Friday, told viewers she’s been able to share music, talk to him “and just support him” over the phone while in hospital.

“As [Kate] said, as long as Derek’s here, there is absolute hope,” Singh said.

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays from 6am on ITV
