Kate Garraway's devastating update on husband's Derek Draper's recovery

Kate Garraway has revealed the devastating effects coronavirus has had on her husband Derek Draper's body.

Derek was rushed to hospital in March 2020 after testing positive for the virus.

The dad-of-two battled in intensive care for weeks and wasn't released from hospital until over a year later.

He returned home, but still requires round the clock care and Kate has been forced to make many adaptations to their home.

On Thursday's show Kate appeared on GMB alongside Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard and spoke about the effects that long covid could have on people.

Kate said that when people spoke about "fatigue" she thought it was similar to the way you felt getting up early for breakfast tv.

But after seeing how exhausted Derek is the word has taken on a whole new meaning.

She said: "People who have had it mildly are starting to argue that it's the same as flu, because flu can be devastating to people as well.

"But this is very different because flu doesn't give you this degree of organ damage. I mean, even when you look at some of the symptoms that people who have been double vaccinated suffer from - it's fatigue.

"Now fatigue, I used to think, was just being exhausted by getting up in the morning.

"But the fatigue that Derek has - I know that he's an extreme case because he's got multiple organ challenges - but even some with more milder cases... Derek is sleeping 20 hours of 24 hour a day.

"He has 10 minute windows and it's not like he's feeling a bit tired, he goes white, pale and it's like everything shuts down."

*GMB continues at 6am on ITV tomorrow
