Kate Garraway named Inspiration of the Year after coping with husband's Covid battle

Kate Garraway was left emotional when she was hailed as Inspiration of the Year.

She was handed Hello's Inspiration of the Year prize at Good Morning Britain's 1 Million Minutes Awards last night.

Kate, 53, was given the award because of the way she's handled her husband Derek Draper's coronavirus battle.

As he's battled the disease in hospital for months, fighting for his life, Kate has raised their children Darcey and Billy while continuing to work and raise awareness and educate people about the effects Covid-19 can have on people and their loved ones.

On today's GMB, host Ben Shephard said: "We are celebrating as well an award that has been presented to one of us in the studio - who might it be?"

Humbled Kate sat there as Ben went around the studio naming co-workers, before saying: "Of course, we are very proud that Kate has been awarded the Hello! Star Woman of 2020 Inspiration of the Year

"Now Kate will undoubtedly be very self-deprecating about this, but we all know what she's been through."

Kate said: "I was flabbergasted."

But Ben cut in: "Stop talking for a minute, I'm talking.

"We all know what she's been through and how extraordinary she has been, and she will palm it off and say 'I just had to do it and there are other people doing more amazing things', but we are extraordinarily, extraordinarily proud of you, Kate and what you've managed to do and have a huge amount of admiration, and often look at ourselves and wonder how you're managing to get through it and do it."

Kate explained: "I was surprised, because like everything it was done virtually so I was absolutely flabbergasted and surprised. I thought I was there for something else and it was very sweet."

In a clip from the ceremony, Kate was seen holding up her award.

She said: "Well it's so kind of you, I don't feel like I'm an inspiration at all.

"I feel like I've just been trying to get through. If it has been helpful then that's lovely.

"If you've lost someone due to Covid or lost someone for whatever reason, I think Christmas is very tough so I'm lucky that Derek is still with us and we still have hope for next year."

"If there's life, there's hope," Kate said in the studio.
