Kate Garraway mocks Tories for finally nationalising railways after Labour's pleas

Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway could not help but laugh during Thursday' show as Transport Secretary Grant Shapps listed the reasons the government has decided to nationalise the railways, something Labour has pledged to do for years.

Kate and co host Ranvir Singh were speaking the minister after it emerged the UK's train network will soon be run by a public-owned body as part of a revamp.

Kate told Mr Shapps he was "reinventing the wheel" as past Labour leaders including Jeremy Corbyn have previously called for the trains to be nationalised.

Ranvir began: "Let's talk about the Great British Railway that you are launching, to help centralise and it more cost=effective to travel on the railways.

"The franchising system which was brought in under John Major, a Tory idea, is it an admission that actually Labour were right all along?

"That public services ought to be in the hands of public government hands, and you have capitulated to that finally and admitted failure?"

Mr Shapps replied: "Not quite, British Rail, which was the predecessor, actually saw fewer and fewer passengers every year, stations closed, tracks closed down, communities cut off, we don't want to go back to those old days.

"I want a simplified system, where if there's a problem, there is one organisation to see to it, Great British Railways will run the track, the ticketing, run the timetable - jobs which at the moment are done by a variety of organisations, leading to an industry of blame culture -"

Kate interjected: "Oh my goodness, I can't believe a Tory minister is saying this as though you have reinvented the wheel!

"That is describing exactly what Labour said about why it should be nationalised.

"Can you believe you are here, saying this is the right way forward, as a conservative minister?" she laughed.

Mr Shapps replied: "I just want the services to run -"

"That's all anybody has ever wanted, affordable services that run on time!" Kate shot back.

One viewer praised Kate: "Loving @kategarraway grilling Grant Shapps this morning and not falling for any of his nonsense waffle #GMB ".

Another tweeted: "Labour believe the state knows best, the Tories believe in the market. Shapps can waffle all he likes, like the energy price cap, they've just nicked it from Labour #gmb ".

"Shapps rewriting history now #GMB," added a third.
