Kate Garraway has recalled the moment that she was mistakenly told husband Derek Draper "may have died" during his Covid-19 battle.
The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter has spoken about the past year in which her husband has been hospitalised after contracting coronavirus.
Derek was placed in a coma as medics helped him battle the virus but he has been left with his major organs deeply affected by the effects of the illness and there are fears that he may never recover.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, Kate has opened up about the past 12 months and said there was a moment that she was given the horrifying message that Derek "may have died".
Kate said that it took almost 24 hours to find out the truth about her husband's condition and that he was still alive and fighting the virus.
She said: "I was just sitting on the phone, waiting to know if he’d died or not."
Kate said she was told: "He may have died. Somebody will call you back."
It took a day for news about Derek's condition to be relayed back to her as Kate agonised that she may have lost him.
She added: "Then it turned out that somebody had died who had a similar name to his."
Kate has faced a gamut of emotions while Derek was clinging on to life in an induced coma.
She was told by doctors to prepare for the moment that he might lose his fight and pass away.
After Derek failed to wake up from the coma, Kate said: "The very worst moment was when they said he could be locked in for ever."
She added: "And I just thought, this is a horror story. I don’t know if he’ll ever have any kind of life again. We just don’t know."
Derek has beaten Covid but has still been unable to gain consciousness from the induced coma.
He has been in intensive care for a year and is still in a critical condition, being the longest surviving Covid-19 inpatient in the UK.
