Kate Garraway may have to wait until summer next year for husband Derek's prognosis

Kate Garraway has said her husbands prognosis may not be clear until next summer.

Derek Draper, 53, is the 'sickest person the team of doctors have treated that has lived,' Kate has said in a new ITV documentary.

The former Labour lobbyist has suffered kidney failure, liver and pancreatic damage, has holes in his lungs from pneumonia and has lost 8 stone following his battle with coronavirus which saw him placed into an induced coma last March.

He remains in a prolonged disorder of consciousness and will be seen communicating with his wife of 16 years in Finding Derek, Kate's ITV documentary which airs at 9pm tonight.

In personal footage Good Morning Britain star Kate recorded for herself she is heard saying "we've got him back," as Derek appeared via FaceTime while he's in hospital.

Speaking about the prospect of bringing him home at some point, Kate told the Mirror : "Derek will need professional expertise because we don’t want Derek to regress, we want him to progress and that demands specific skills.

"So it's a question of looking at the best way forward. Back last June, they said it could take up to two years for us to know his true future."

She added: "The more that he has done for him now, the more therapy to help him improve, the better his chances of having a life really, and the less support he will need long term.

"So that's my goal at the moment once I can get in to see him, to try and work out the best way to help him to the next stage.

"I know that life will have an impact on the dynamic of our relationship. But of course it is something I do willingly."

Kate appeared on GMB on Tuesday morning to speak about her documentary ahead of its release.

The 53-year-old presenter admits that there is a moment in the documentary that will be "tough for people to watch and that’s the moment he felt he can’t go on."
