Kate Garraway says her kids have 'lost their dad' in emotional return to GMB

Kate Garraway returned to the Good Morning Britain studio today, for the first time in 100 days.

Her husband, Derek Draper, was taken to hospital on March 29 after struggling to breathe, with doctors eventually putting him in an induced coma on April 5.

Earlier this month, he moved from a deeper coma into a minimum state of consciousness - but is still in critical condition.

Kate joined Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid in the GMB studio today, sharing an emotional update on her husband.

Speaking about coming into the studio, Kate said: "I'm back, it was really emotional, as soon as I walked in I thought I was going to cry."

Doctors warned Kate six times Derek was dying after the virus attacked his lungs, kidney and heart.

Kate said: "Wonderfully his eyes are opening, but we have no real knowledge of what he can see, feel or hear.

"It is a very desperate situation, it is very difficult, the doctors do keep saying it's a miracle he is still alive...

"I was speaking to a doctor who has treated him and he said [Derek] is as sick as anyone I have seen in 35 years."

Piers said: "Where there is life there is hope and I think you have that mentality."

Kate said: "The doctors are saying to me I've got to get on with life.

"For Darcy and Billy effectively right now they have lost their dad, they haven't he's there, they are talking to him on FaceTime, he can't respond and he's not a presence the way he should be in our lives."

Kate also announced she will make her presenting return to GMB next Monday and Tuesday.

She said: "I just feel like I have to get on and do the things that I'm supposed to be good at.

"So I'm going to come back on Monday, if you'll have me, as you two are going. I am going to be with Ben Shephard."
