Kate Garraway 'lucky' husband Derek Draper is 'still with us' as she faces 'waiting game'

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway remains hopeful her husband Derek Draper will recover from his coronavirus battle.

On Monday's GMB, she gave fans a new update on his condition as he remained in hospital.

But Kate revealed how "lucky" she and her kids Darcey and Billy felt to still have their father with them, after a tough few months.

It's been a troubling time since he was struck down with Covid-19, and was left in a coma in intensive care.

Amid fears he would never recover even after no longer having the virus in his body, he's gradually been showing signs of recovery.

Kate has been able to see her husband, while he remains only slightly conscious and is yet to wake up fully.

But Kate refuses to give up hope despite new challenges every week, and she revealed the positives of still having her husband in her life after fearing she was going to lose him.

Speaking to co-host Adil Ray on Monday, she said: "I'm worried about him and he still has lots of challenges.

"Challenges in terms of food, challenges with everything, lungs and everything, and we just want him to wake up.

"The nurses are putting this show on in the morning for him, in the hope that it might trigger something.

"It's a waiting game but at least I am lucky that I have the chance to wait, because he is still with us."

Also on the show, she confessed feeling "bad" about enjoying herself on GMB amid his health battle.

Kate has been back on the show since last month, having taken a break after Derek was rushed to hospital.

Sharing her feelings, she explained: "Last week when were were having fun and games, you feel almost bad cos you think, 'I’m laughing and he’s still there in a minimally conscious state,' it's a difficult balance."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
