Kate Garraway left 'feeling guilty' about leaving husband Derek to film new TV show

Kate Garraway has admitted she felt guilty bout leaving husband Derek Draper at home while she filmed an episode of a new BBC show.

Former political aided turned mental health champion Derek contracted coronavirus back in March 2020 and, after his condition took a turn for the worse, was placed in a medically induced coma by doctors.

While he survived, wife Kate was told that Derek had one of the 'worst infections' of any Covid-19 survivors in the UK, meaning that he still faces a long road to recovery.

He has been back at home with Good Morning Britain host Kate and their children Billy and Darcey since the spring but this week, giving an emotional update on his progress, Kate admitted all she wanted to do was to get a hug from him, but that still wasn't possible.

Viewers will see former Strictly and I'm A Celebrity contestant Kate will make the switch from ITV to BBC on Wednesday night when she appears in new show Walking With..., which involves a host of celebrities being followed by cameras as they stroll some of their favourite scenic routes.

Other famous faces taking part in the show include Nick Grimshaw and Steph McGovern but, Kate has taken to Instagram to reveal that she felt pangs of guilt when she went off to film her episode.

She posted: "It was such a special day of filming - the first & only day I have spent on my own , without Derek & the kids since he came home from hospital.

"I started off feeling very guilty at the indulgence of having the space, bathed in nature, to just “be”. And then as time went on as I walked & walked on my own gradually found a wonderful sense of perspective & energy renewal."

Talking about her love for walking, Kate added: "There is something very calming about the rhythm of walking , to me. I think science says it’s to do with balancing both halves of the brain with the body or something!

"Whatever it is when it is combined with nature in all its beauty & brutality, the force of life and, in its “season” , decay and damage I find it helps me get a new perspective on the ups and downs of my own life."
