Kate Garraway: 'It's an agonising time but I know I'm not alone as Derek fights for his life'

Kate Garraway has shared with fans more details about how her family are coping while husband Derek Draper fights for his life after contracting coronavirus.

In a post to members of her clubgarraway website the GMB host reveals that her family are going through an "agonising time".

She writes: "This is such a tough time for us all as we struggle to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We must all stand together and support each other through these excruciatingly difficult times.

"As you may know my husband Derek is critically ill with COVID-19 in intensive care and it remains an agonising time for us as a family.

"But I know I am not alone, so many others are worried for their loved ones or having to cope with the grief of losing them and there are challenges for everyone in this pandemic.

"Let's stand together and do share your experiences too."

Ben Shepherd shares an update and Kate Garraway's husband and says she has seen him

This morning Kate's GMB co-host Ben Shepherd gave fans an update from her.

He told viewers: "She's wanted to share the fact that she's been able to speak with Derek in the evenings in a coma.

"She's been able to share music with him, talk to him and support him," he added to the camera.

"It's tough, it's really, really tough because he's critically ill."

Former Labour adviser Derek, 52, has been battling coronavirus in intensive care since March 30, but took a turn for the worse after being rushed to hospital with severe symptoms of COVID-19.

Because of the strict rules around visiting coronavirus patients in hospital, distraught Kate and their children Darcey, 14, and William, 11, have been forced to stay away from his ICU and haven't seen him in person for nearly a month.

Last night, Kate shared a heartbreaking update about Derek's condition.

Confirming he was being kept alive solely by the heroic efforts of his NHS team, Kate said he was "still critically ill" in intensive care as she joined her street for the weekly Clap For Carers session.

"Another emotional #clapthecarers & never has it been more needed," she shared on Instagram.

"If this pandemic #lockdown is dragging on for us, imagine what it is like for them. Shift after endlessly long shift , bravely going to work, to battle the virus and give our loved ones a chance.

"None of those keeping my Derek alive have ever made me feel it's a chore, they want to win this as much as I want them to, but it must be so hard. He is still critically ill in intensive care, but where there is life there is hope."

Kate continued: "Thank you #nhs from the bottom of my heart. Thank you too for all your wonderful messages and advice of how to get through this.

"I am gathering the things that have helped me and putting them on my free clubgarraway.com ( link in bio).

"I know I am not alone in struggling. We are all facing challenges , whether we have a sick loved one or not, so let's stand together & I hope something on there helps YOU - even if it's just to share!! Lots of love Kate xxx #hope #love."
